NOMA’s Lapis Center for the ArtsIn this lecture, Dr. Kara Cooney, author of When Women Ruled the World: Six Queens of Egypt, addresses questions of ancient social inequalities and how women negotiated their limited leadership roles. How was their power expressed when regularly cloaked by a man’s dominance? Were they able to rule “behind the throne”? How much of this ancient reality still touches us today?

Ancient Egypt in New Orleans: A Community Conversation
In conjunction with the exhibition Queen Nefertari’s Egypt, museologist Erika Witt leads a community conversation to explore how ancient Egypt is recognized in different aspects of New Orleans’s culture. Featured panelists are experts in history, spiritualism, and iconography, and the group will discuss how resonances of ancient Egypt can be found in the daily life, work, and cultural activities of New Orleanians.

Funerary Traditions in Ancient Egypt and New Orleans
For this conversation, Community Engagement Curator Nic Brierre Aziz is in dialogue with Stephanie Rhodes Navarre and Joan Rhodes, two of the four managers of the Rhodes Funeral Home, to explore the history of their family’s business, the traditions that go into their burials and the ways in which their work relates to the African-based funerary practices of Ancient Egypt.
