On a chilly November evening, members of the Teen Art Council (TAC) gathered under string lights on the patio at Camp Abundance, an artist residency and special event compound headed by artist and most generous host Dawn DeDeaux. DeDeaux’s retrospective exhibition The Space Between Worlds, currently on view at NOMA, has served as the focus of the TAC’s year thus far, fueling explorations in the galleries, conversations with NOMA staff members, and an upcoming creative offering for New Orleans teens. Singer-songwriter Kelly Love Jones brings a star-studded cast to NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts on Thursday, November 18, for an evening of music, visual art, dance, and theater. The NOLA Project is back in residence at NOMA with Tell It To Me Sweet, their first in person production since winter 2020. The company commissioned Brittany N. Williams to write a “trail of tales” inspired by folk and fairy tales and set outdoors in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden. Beginning in January, Brittany will take on a new position within the company, becoming a Co-Artistic Director with company founder and longtime Artistic Director A.J. Allegra. NOMA Curator of Education Tracy Kennan chatted with Brittany and A.J. about the merits of performing in public spaces and the importance of telling stories. Read More

The New Orleans Museum of Art presents Dawn DeDeaux: The Space Between Worlds, the first comprehensive museum exhibition for the pioneering multimedia artist Dawn DeDeaux, on view October 22, 2021 through January 23, 2022. One of the first American artists to connect questions about social justice to emerging environmental concerns, DeDeaux’s art responds to an uncertain future imperiled by runaway population growth, breakneck industrial development, and the imminent threat of climate change. While the last two weeks have been a difficult time for all of us, I am happy to report that the New Orleans Museum of Art staff are all safe and accounted for. On Wednesday, September 8, full power and internet services were restored to the museum. After the lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina, the museum developed an emergency preparedness protocol that is activated in anticipation of extreme weather events. Upon learning of the expected severity of Hurricane Ida, we began to immediately roll out the protocol in order to maintain the safety of NOMA’s collection, building, and grounds. Read More

Since 2015, NOMA’s Learning and Engagement department has worked with Poydras Home to offer Artful Minds, a program for visitors with Alzheimer’s and other dementias and their caretakers. Typically, Artful Minds was offered nearly once a month. Poydras Home residents and their family members were able to visit NOMA in January and February 2020. Then, like so many of the museums offerings during the coronavirus pandemic, it was necessary to redesign the Artful Minds program for the remainder of 2020. Read More

After several quiet months, the museum is slowly and safely welcoming small groups of young visitors back into our spaces, sprinkling chatter and laughter back into the sounds and rhythms of the galleries. Lit in hot pink on a Saturday in May, NOMA’s new Lapis Center for the Arts became home-for-a-day to GIRLS NOLA—the Girls Initiative for Reproducing Leaders in Society—for an incredibly special reunion and retreat.
