Art-Making Activity: Word Power!

In this activity, you will create a series of letter posters to convey a message of positivity to display within your neighborhood community. Inspired by Robert Indiana’s LOVE: Red, Blue in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden.

MATERIALS

  • White drawing paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Tape

DIRECTIONS

  1. Generate a list of positive affirming words. Choose one to work with or assign to friends or family within your household.  Suggestions: Love, hope, peace, power, unity…

2.  Write each letter of a chosen word on separate sheets of paper in large, block-letter style font.

3. Color each letter and tape to the window or door of your home facing the street for all to see.

Build Community! Encourage participation from neighbors. Call them! Chat with them! Check on your fellow neighbor, see how they are doing, and “assign” a word to complete the activity in their households. What an amazing sight it would be if everyone on your block each had an empowering message to share!
