In 2005, documentary filmmaker Rick Beyer became fascinated with the history of the “Ghost Army,” a top-secret tactical deception unit charged with tricking the Nazis during World War II whose work had only recently been declassified. Snead’s Family Dollar General Tree represents the type of “small box” stores that have proliferated across America.
