NOMA is committed to uniting, inspiring, and engaging diverse communities and cultures through the arts—now more than ever. The museum’s reopening represents an important milestone in NOMA’s recovery, but we still need your support to chart the museum’s path forward. The arts provide opportunities for inspiration, discourse, and reflection during challenging times. Your gift will make a direct and immediate impact as NOMA welcomes our community back to the museum and sculpture garden, plans new exhibitions, and develops virtual and at-home arts education resources for our school partners.
This November, students in Professor Jill Stoll`s Fundamentals of Design and Making course at @tulaneu were led through a tour of works on view from @neworleansmuseumofart`s decorative arts and design collection, including works on view in @cafenoma!
Students were tasked with selecting decorative artworks from the collection to inspire their final project: a graphic poster that informed viewers about their chosen design object through various design elements, including text, graphics, and more.
Last week, NOMA`s RosaMary Curator of Decorative Arts and Design Mel Buchanan was invited to serve as a guest critic for the students` final presentations. Congrats to these students for their excellent NOMA-inspired work!

FRANK GEHRY: 1929-2025
A globally-celebrated master of architecture, Frank Gehry was also an accomplished artist and designer. During his career, which spanned over five decades, he utilized pioneering new technologies and complex materials across his architectural and artistic works. Art and architecture, for Gehry, had much to say to one another, and he often engaged in one form in such a way as to illuminate its parallels with the other.
Gehry`s 2014 sculpture "Bear with Us," playfully named after the subject of the work, is constructed of stainless steel which mimics the jagged, reflective effects of a creased aluminum sheet. While the form this work takes is highly conceptual, the resulting piece is unmistakably ursine, showcasing the artist`s capacity to create stunning-yet-wholly-recognizable structures from uncommon media.
At his best, Gehry expands our conception of what art, sculpture, design, and architecture can be when approached with a spirit of invention and play.
"Bear with Us" (2014) is on view in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden at @neworleansmuseumofart.
