French conceptualist Camille Henrot is a rising star on the international art scene. She won the Silver Lion award for promising young artists at the 2013 Venice Biennale – the most prestigious art exhibition in the world. Her first U.S. exhibition “Camille Henrot: Cities of Ys” opens with a reception and artist lecture at The New Orleans Museum of Art Friday (Oct. 11) from 5 to 9 p.m.
The concept of Henrot’s custom-made NOMA exhibition is intriguing. Using video and sculpture, she plans to poetically compare the heritage of the south Louisiana Houma Indians with a folkloric French coastal city called Ys that disappeared beneath the ocean when a princess stole the magical key to the levee gate. Henrot will discuss her installation Friday (Oct. 11) from 6 to 7 p.m.
Friday’s opening also includes free art activities, live music by Sarah Quintana, a lecture by Asian arts curator Lisa Rotondo-McCord on “Chinese Jades From the Cohn Collection,” and a gift shop reception for New Orleans jewelry and sculpture master Thomas Mann.
NOMA is located at the end of Esplanade Avenue in City Park. Visit noma.org or call 504.658.4100.
