Description
Drawing in ink with gouache highlights on paper in hand-ruled French mat with gilt additions. Depicts a scene from the second year of the French Republic at which time slavery was abolished, briefly, as it was reinstated by Napoleon in 1802. Several figures are shown rejoicing as the proclamation is read by Pierre-Gaspard Chaumette (Anaxagoras Chaumette). Notably, Jean-Baptiste Belley, a former slave who had become an important military leader from Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) that helped lead the revolution in that French territory, is shown at lower left.
