Description

Songye nkisi figure with animal horn ascending from the top of the head. Figure wears a choker of blue and white glass beads around the neck; brass strips attached at the forehead and temples; iron nails and tacks inserted in various parts of the body and base; embedded teeth on either shoulder and either temple and in the center of the chest; a feather ornament attached at the back of the head; four iron domed objects attached at the rear of the head; fetish materials such as fur and hide inserted into the abdomen. This was the joint creation of a skilled carver and a trained nganga or ritual practitioner.
