Description
This kettle drum is an example of a 'Master Drum'. The mother figure is presented in a full frontal seated position with a suckling child seated in profile, head held back and at an angle by the mother's right hand that is holding her breast up and out at the same time. Her left hand holds the child in place. To the mother's left there is carved in high relief a man seated on an 'asipini' Asante prestige chair holding a chalice. The drum is supported on short stout legs. The front half of one foot is amputated. The drum membrane is fitted over the drum's inverted rim and held tight by a series of strings slipped around six evenly spaced pegs attached to the drum's upper body.
