In the 10 years since its founding, New Orleans-based premium sock brand Bonfolk has become a staple of local fashion. Pairing high-quality materials, playful designs, and a philanthropic business model (the company donates a pair of socks for every pair purchased), Bonfolk speaks to the city’s culture and vibrance while making a lasting impact.
This is the spirit that went behind Bonfolk’s 2024 collaboration with NOMA on a slate of socks inspired by the museum. “Bonfolk had been stocked in the NOMA Museum Shop for years [before the collaboration],” says Janna Hart Black, Bonfolk’s Founder and Head of Design. “When the opportunity arose to create custom socks together, it felt especially meaningful: creating art in the form of socks that give back to the community.”
The two pairs of Bonfolk x NOMA socks feature colorful renderings of the museum’s iconic griffin, an architectural detail featured in the front of NOMA’s neoclassical building. With classic New Orleans iconography–including streetcars, Sazerac glasses, and blooming magnolias, among many others–being a staple of Bonfolk’s designs, the addition of the NOMA griffin to the brand’s lineup celebrates the museum’s legacy in the city in the form of whimsical, wearable art.
Black notes that “as a native New Orleanian who has been passionate about art [her] whole life and has long loved and frequented the museum,” the Bonfolk x NOMA collaboration is a personal honor. One of her personal favorite events at the museum is the Egg Hunt and Family Festival hosted in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, which she brings her daughter to as an annual springtime tradition.
