Family Day: At the Market

Kids and their grown ups are invited for a day of family fun inspired by Black Orpheus: Jacob Lawrence and the Mbari Club.
Lawrence’s travels in Nigeria inspired him to make bustling paintings exploding with shapes and colors. Imagine the sights and sounds of the streets and marketplaces he visited through your own visit to the galleries, and participate in art-making and activities with the whole family!
Admission and programming are free for families.
Advanced registration is encouraged.
Family Day Highlights
Matriarchs Presented by Artist Connection NOLA
12:30–1:45 pm in the Lapis Center for the Arts
This interdisciplinary performance is a vibrant, cross-cultural celebration of modern day matriarchs who connect ancient traditions with contemporary expressions. The all-female cast invites us into their heart space and ignites our deepest, most organic connection to the planet with soothing, yet powerful channeled creations of music, dance, spoken word, and wisdom.
NOMA Art Cart: Make & Play Gallery Walk
10 am–2 pm in the Ella West Freeman Galleries featuring Black Orpheus: Jacob Lawrence and the Mbari Club
Walk and play your way through the galleries through this family-friendly activity walk. Visit five artworks and participate in a looking, drawing, or play-based activity at each stop!
Art-Making: Printmaking at the Market
10 am–2 pm in the elevator lobby by the NOMA Museum Shop
Take a closer look at some popular foods commonly found at the Mararaba Market in northern Nigeria as inspiration for drawings and one-of-a-kind prints.
