Anne Mee began painting professionally as a young girl as means of supporting her widowed mother and siblings. In 1790, at age twenty, Mee was painting portraits of England’s Queen Charlotte and the royal princesses at Windsor Castle.

In her teens, Mee was the protégé of England’s most fashionable artist, George Romney. Even after her 1793 marriage to Joseph Mee, Anne continued to paint, though reportedly only of female sitters owing to the intimacy of portraiture. In 1814, Prince Regent George IV commissioned a series from Mee entitled “The Gallery of Beauties of the Court of George III.”
