Ultimately produced by Miramax Films\, and starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale\, the tale of star-crossed lovers was declared “an instant romantic comedy classic” and was a smash hit at the box office\, grossing nearly $100 million in the United States alone. In his review of the film\, legendary movie critic Gene Shalit wrote: “I’ve been reviewing movies for 35 years and Serendipity joins my personal list of matchless romantic comedies. Thrilling\, most wonderful and beyond compare!” In the years since its release\, Serendipity is often listed among the best romantic comedies of all time. \nIn 2006\, filmmaker Ridley Scott hand-picked Klein to adapt the Peter Mayle bestseller\, A Good Year. Though modest at the box office\, the film has since developed a cult following\, with many fans traveling toProvence to tour the picturesque locations where the film was shot. \nThat same year\, Klein adapted the best-selling novel\, The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing\, by Melissa Bank. Considered the first modern “chick lit” book\, Klein eventually decided to direct his own screenplay.  \nOver the next decade\, Klein became a highly sought-after script doctor\, with a special emphasis on romantic stories. Among the many films he worked on were the Nicholas Sparks films Dear John (starring Channing Tatum)\, Safe Haven\, (directed by Lasse Hallstrom)\, and The Best of Me. All three were box office hits. \nIn 2012\, Pulitzer Prize-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda tapped Klein to adapt his Tony-Award-winning Broadway musical\, In the Heights\, for Universal Studios. That same year\, Klein also co-wrote Mirror\, Mirror\, a reimagining of the classic Snow White fairy tale. Mirror\, Mirror received enthusiastic reviews and ultimately grossed $183 million at the worldwide box office. \nAlongside the film\, Klein published his debut YA novel The In Between with Little\, Brown for Young Readers. The book has since been translated into ten languages\, expanding his audience across the globe. \nKlein is currently writing Horoscope Computer for Mattel Films\, based on the iconic 1980s astrology toy. He resides in Los Angeles with his wife and son. \nAbout Meryl Poster\nMeryl Poster is a multi-award-winning producer\, media executive and industry leader with a distinguished career spanning film\, television and digital media. SUMMARY:20th Annual Tulane Maya Symposium: Cities of the Maya People in the Rainforest
DESCRIPTION:Join the Middle American Research Institute (MARI) for their 20th Annual Tulane Maya Symposium. This year’s keynote address by Dr. M. Charlotte Arnauld will be on Cities of the Maya People in the Rainforest and held in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts.  \nThe lecture will begin at 6:30 pm\, followed by a reception in the adjacent Coleman Courtyard at 7:30 pm. \nRegistration for the lecture and following reception is free and open to the public. \nRegister Now \n\nAbout the Lecture\nThe ancient Maya cities were places of daily sociopolitical and economic interaction\, like all cities\, yet with a high proportion of agricultural activities. As fixed places of concentrated population in the lowland rainforest with scattered and seasonal resources\, the clustering of Maya settlements caused structural tensions between the place of residence and the place of subsistence production for the peasants\, and\, above all\, specific construction strategies and neighborhood-level social dynamics. During the Terminal Classic period\, these dynamics led to acute sociopolitical tensions between kings and nobles and\, following the collapse of dynasties\, to gradual urban transformations\, until the lowland urban system was almost completely relocated during the eleventh century. \nAbout the Speaker\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDr. M. Charlotte Arnauld is Emeritus Research Director at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (Laboratoire Archéologie des Amériques\, France). As a Mesoamerican archaeologist\, she has directed or co-directed five long-term projects in Guatemala and Mexico. She specializes in Maya urban studies\, exploring neighborhood dynamics and population mobility as part of her broader work in social archaeology. Her co-edited volumes include The Neighborhood as a Social and Spatial Unit in Mesoamerican Cities\, Mobility and Migration in Ancient Mesoamerican Cities\, and Building an Archaeology of Maya Urbanism. She has published in the Journal de la Société des Américanistes\, Ancient Mesoamerica\, and the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology.

Her popular Mardi Gras song was recorded with Smokey Johnson (Fats Domino’s drummer) and George French (Fats’ bassist and Cosimo Matassa studio musician). She began recording in the early 1970s in Memphis with producer Willie Mitchell and has contributed to numerous New Orleans projects\, including a jazz album with Flora Purim and a WEZB compilation of the city’s top pop acts. \nA versatile\, ageless singer now in her 80s\, Henrietta performs weekly at Holy Diver in Tremé and has maintained a strong presence across the region for 45 years with regular appearances at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro\, Pat O’Brien’s Piano Bar\, and Morgan Freeman’s Ground Zero Blues Club in Biloxi. She’s performed Brazilian jazz at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival — she and bandleader Edu were famously the first couple married at Jazz Fest in 1982 — and has sung the National Anthem at Saints games on multiple occasions.\n\nOn television she’s frequently cast as the quintessential “older New Orleans–style singing pianist\,” appearing in series such as HBO’s Togetherness and TNT’s Claws. Nationally she’s performed at iconic venues including the Troubadour\, Chateau Marmont\, the Roosevelt Hotel (L.A.)\, Catch a Rising Star and Mimi’s Piano Bar (NYC). Internationally she has brought her New Orleans–inflected music to audiences in Japan\, Italy and Brazil\, and she has played private events for corporations and celebrities. Renowned for her warm\, intimate connection with audiences\, Henrietta continues to captivate crowds of any size.\nAbout the Work\nFor a limited time\, NOMA visitors have the unique opportunity to see the custom piano played by acclaimed musical artist Jon Batiste during the Super Bowl LIX pregame show. On view in the museum’s Lapis Center for the Arts\, the vibrant and colorful grand piano features a design by artist and bestselling author Suleika Jaouad\, who is Batiste’s wife. \nLEARN MORE

The lands of the river parishes hold the intersecting histories of enslavement\, settler colonialism\, and environmental degradation.\n\nWe are descended from the enslaved men\, women\, and children who were forced to labor at one or more of the hundreds of plantations that line the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. Starting in the 1970s\, large industrial  petrochemical plants began purchasing the land of these plantations still surrounded by vulnerable Black descendant communities. The region is now known as “Cancer Alley” for the extreme risks of cancer and death due to pollution. The community faces many other problems such as food insecurity\, high unemployment\, high poverty\, land dispossession\, and health issues that stem from a culture of disregard for Black communities and their quality of life.\n\nThrough programming\, education\, advocacy\, and outreach\, The Descendants Project is committed to reversing the vagrancies of slavery through healing and restorative work. We aim to eliminate the narrative violence of plantation tourism and champion the voice of the Black descendant community while demanding action that supports the total well-being of Black descendants. \nAbout the River Road African American Museum \nThe mission of the River Road African American Museum (RRAAM) is to educate visitors about the history and culture of African Americans in the rural communities of south Louisiana through the collection\, preservation\, and interpretation of art\, artifacts\, and historic buildings. \nAbout Dawoud Bey: Elegy\nDawoud Bey: Elegy draws upon the factual and imagined realities of the early African American presence in the United States. Including forty-five black-and-white photographs and two film installations\, the exhibition elucidates the deeply profound historical memory still embedded in geography at historically significant sites in Virginia\, Louisiana and Ohio. Through the interweaving of three photographic series—”Stony the Road “(2023)\, “In This Here Place” (2019)\, and “Night Coming Tenderly\, Black” (2017)—Bey offers a framework through which to conceptualize the landscapes of Virginia\, Louisiana\, and Ohio (respectively) through images that convey the memories of our shared American past. \nLearn More
