Please check this page for updates. \n\nAbout the Performers\nDr. Michael White Quartet\nDr. Michael White \nDr. Michael White is among the most visible and important New Orleans musicians today. He is one of only a few of today’s native New Orleans born artists to continue the authentic traditional jazz style. Dr. White is noted for his classic New Orleans jazz clarinet sound\, for leading several popular bands\, and for his many efforts to preserve and extend the early jazz tradition. Dr. White is a relative of early generation jazz musicians\, including bassist Papa John Joseph\, clarinetist Willie Joseph\, and saxophonist and clarinetist Earl Fouche. \nWhite is also a jazz historian\, producer\, lecturer\, and consultant. He has developed and performed many jazz history themed programs. He has written and published numerous essays in books\, journals\, and other publications. For several years he served as a guest coach at the Juilliard Music School (Juilliard Jazz). He was the musical director for numerous Jazz at Lincoln Center concerts. He has been the traditional jazz consultant and coordinator for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival since 1995. White has also had a long association of performing and recording with acclaimed trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. \n\nAbout Dawoud Bey: Elegy\nDawoud Bey: Elegy draws upon the factual and imagined realities of the early African American presence in the United States. Including forty-five black-and-white photographs and two film installations\, the exhibition elucidates the deeply profound historical memory still embedded in geography at historically significant sites in Virginia\, Louisiana and Ohio. Through the interweaving of three photographic series—”Stony the Road “(2023)\, “In This Here Place” (2019)\, and “Night Coming Tenderly\, Black” (2017)—Bey offers a framework through which to conceptualize the landscapes of Virginia\, Louisiana\, and Ohio (respectively) through images that convey the memories of our shared American past. \nLearn More \nThank You to Our Supporters\nNOMA at Night is supported in part by grant funds from Ruby K. SUMMARY:Book Club: The Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s book club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in the museum’s collection and exhibitions.  \nIt is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to participate. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections.  \nBooks are selected in advance and planned according to the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copy of the titles. Selections are also available at the NOMA Museum Shop\, where museum members receive a 10% discount. \nRegister Now \nMeetings are held in person or via Zoom. All meetings begin at 12 pm. For more information or questions\, please email programs@noma.org. \n\nAbout the Book\nThe Underground Railroad\nby Colson Whitehead\n\n\nCora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves\, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans\, she is coming into womanhood—where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar\, a recent arrival from Virginia\, tells her about the Underground Railroad\, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Matters do not go as planned—Cora kills a young white boy who tries to capture her. Though they manage to find a station and head north\, they are being hunted. \nIn Whitehead’s ingenious conception\, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor—engineers and conductors operate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. Cora and Caesar’s first stop is South Carolina\, in a city that initially seems like a haven. But the city’s placid surface masks an insidious scheme designed for its black denizens. And even worse: Ridgeway\, the relentless slave catcher\, is close on their heels. Forced to flee again\, Cora embarks on a harrowing flight\, state by state\, seeking true freedom. \nLike the protagonist of Gulliver’s Travels\, Cora encounters different worlds at each stage of her journey—hers is an odyssey through time as well as space. As Whitehead brilliantly re-creates the unique terrors for black people in the pre–Civil War era\, his narrative seamlessly weaves the saga of America from the brutal importation of Africans to the unfulfilled promises of the present day. The Underground Railroad is at once a kinetic adventure tale of one woman’s ferocious will to escape the horrors of bondage and a shattering\, powerful meditation on the history we all share.

For more information or questions\, please email programs@noma.org. \n\nAbout the Book\nRolland Golden: Life\, Love\, and Art in the French Quarter\nby Rolland Golden\n\n\nIn the early twentieth century\, the French Quarter had become home to a vibrant community of working artists attracted to the atmosphere\, architecture\, and colorful individuals who populated the scene (and who also became some of its first preservationists). Louisiana native Rolland Golden was one of these artists to live\, work\, and raise a family in this most storied corner of New Orleans. With 94 black-and-white and 54 color photographs and illustrations\, his memoir of that life focuses on the period of 1955 to 1976. Golden\, a painter\, discusses the particular challenges of making a living from art\, and his story becomes a family affair involving his daughters and his beloved wife\, Stella. \nGolden’s studio sat in a patio on Royal Street\, around the corner from Preservation Hall where old-time musicians played Dixieland Jazz. Golden sketched and painted many of them in a visual style that encompassed realism and gradually developed into abstract realism. Golden recalls work that he did in historic preservation\, sketching architecture for publications such as the Vieux Carré Courier\, and he discusses his studies with renowned regionalist painter John McCrady. The artist frankly discusses his experiences with the display\, representation\, and sale of his work\, presenting a little-explored and yet crucial part of a working artist’s life. The memoir concludes with Golden and his wife traveling to the premiere of his exhibition in Moscow\, having been selected by a Russian envoy as the only American artist to have a one-man touring exhibition in the former Soviet Union. Among the nearly 150 black-and-white and color illustrations are never-before-seen photos and sketches by the artist.

He blurs the boundaries between public and private in an effort to confront individual and collective values\, particularly in contemporary Tunisian society. Mejri examines what happens in the painting and through the painting\, where indifference bids farewell\, and affect becomes activated; it strikes back with force. \nHe has exhibited widely\, including the 13th Cairo Biennial\, Cairo\, Egypt / Dakar Biennale of Contemporary African Art\, Dakar\, Senegal / The New Orleans Museum of Art\, New Orleans\, USA / The Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon\, France / N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art\, Detroit\, USA / New York International Independent Film and Video Festival\, New York\, USA / Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) L.I.\, New York\, USA. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the museum on select Saturday mornings for Studio KIDS! youth art-making workshops. We’ll take inspiration from artwork in the museum and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden and make our own creations with a teaching artist. \nAbout Studio KIDS!: Tinker Hatfield\nIn this upcoming Studio KIDS! workshop\, students will be introduced to the art and design work of Tinker Hatfield\, a designer known for his numerous Air Jordan designs. Students will explore artwork across NOMA’s galleries to find inspiration for their own designs. After discussing the elements and principles of art and design\, students will incorporate the artwork at NOMA into their Hatfield-inspired shoe designs. Please check this page for updates.\n\nAbout New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations\nThe exhibition New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations spotlights the work of four contemporary artists working in cities across West Africa: Chief Ekpenyong Bassey Nsa\, Sheku “Goldenfinger” Fofanah\, David Sanou\, and Hervé Youmbi. The first presentation of its kind\, New African Masquerades offers a rare look into contemporary West African masquerade by contextualizing the works of individual artists within a range of social\, economic\, and religious practices and examining their networks of viewership and exchange. \nLearn More \nAbout Kumasi\nKumasi is New Orleans’ own full Afrobeat orchestra. We fell in love with a style of music created over 50 years ago by Fela Kuti and Tony Allen\, and we bring it to the people of New Orleans with live shows\, as well as three recorded albums. You can expect lots of Fela Kuti tunes and some Afrofunk from ’70s Ghana and Benin in our live shows\, and we play and record our original music inspired by those styles. Our original songs are primarily of protest\, as well as vigilance toward change and collective growth\, but composed to make people move\, groove\, and be inspired. \nAbout Jer’Lisa Devezin\nJer’Lisa J. Devezin is an artist and educator born and raised in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans\, LA. She earned her BA from Dillard University and MFA from Southern Methodist University. Rukiya treats none of her creations as a “job” in the traditional sense; it’s more the joy of the experience while doing. She is perhaps then a mixed media artist in the truest form. \nGifted as a quilter and storyteller of quilts\, art and fashion designer\, and master beader as well\, her talents are sought by novices\, major art enthusiasts\, and wealthy collectors. Rukiya has participated in New Orleans JazzFest for many years\, winning numerous awards. She is acknowledging her Chahta American Indian bloodline ancestry. He blurs the boundaries between public and private in an effort to confront individual and collective values\, particularly in contemporary Tunisian society. Mejri examines what happens in the painting and through the painting\, where indifference bids farewell\, and affect becomes activated; it strikes back with force. \nHe has exhibited widely\, including the 13th Cairo Biennial\, Cairo\, Egypt / Dakar Biennale of Contemporary African Art\, Dakar\, Senegal / The New Orleans Museum of Art\, New Orleans\, USA / The Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon\, France / N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art\, Detroit\, USA / New York International Independent Film and Video Festival\, New York\, USA / Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) L.I.\, New York\, USA. He also has had solo exhibitions at Jack Bell Gallery\, London\, UK / Gallery 1957\, Accra\, Ghana / Selma Feriani Gallery\, Tunis\, Tunisia / B7L9 Art Station. The Kamel Lazaar Foundation\, Tunis\, Tunisia / Montague Contemporary\, New York\, USA / Uitstalling Art Gallery\, Genk\, Belgium. \nMejri’s graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in Tunis\, and he is currently teaching at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Nabeul.

DESCRIPTION:Every week\, NOMA hosts gallery talks in the museum and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden led by curators\, artists\, and other special guests. These lively\, participatory conversations provide a moment to take a close look at one work—or a selection of works—currently on view. \nThis week\, join artist Dawn DeDeaux for gallery talks on her work Rushed in Near Ten (2015)\, now on view in the Great Hall. DeDeaux’s talks will take place at 12:30 and 6:00. \nIncluded with museum admission\, which is free for Louisiana residents every Wednesday courtesy of The Helis Foundation’s Art for All initiative. When you arrive at NOMA\, check in at the admissions desk for directions to the appropriate location.
