SUMMARY:SOLD OUT | Art Thrives: Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Art Thrives invites participants ages 55 and above to an eight-week course led by local multimedia artist LaVonna Varnado Brown. where they will learn about various collaging techniques. \, Each session will teach artists various collaging techniques and allow them to reflect on and create art inspired by African diasporic sculptures and textiles found in NOMA’s African arts collection. Participants will explore themes ranging from archiving and legacies\, naming oneself\, mythological origin stories\, and western ideas of categorization and systems. We will build on the language of each artist’s life and the range and depth of each artist’s practice to develop artworks to be presented at the end of the course. \nThis workshop is $55 for NOMA members and $65 for all other participants. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions\, as the content will build on creating a comprehensive piece. \nPLEASE NOTE: This workshop is sold out. She earned a BA from Southeastern University Louisiana with a focus on Theatre and Liberal Arts. After studying abroad in London and Paris in the summer of 2009\, LaVonna has worked as an installation artist\, artist advocate\, teaching artist\, and tutor in and around New Orleans. \nLaVonna creates mixed media visual art that is AfroFutiristic in aesthetic with odes to history\, the Divine Feminine\, and floral daydreams abounding. AfroFuturism is a cultural aesthetic that explores the intersection of art and history with intention to inspire action in the now by healing beyond trauma. In addition to creating multimedia works\, LaVonna curates intentional workshops and expos with a focus on healing and raising spatial awareness. Through her work she hopes to uplift the narrative of rest\, joy\, resistance\, and abundance. \n\nAbout Art Thrives: Creative Aging at NOMA\nIn 2022\, the New Orleans Museum of Art introduced Art Thrives\, an institutional initiative designed to engage adults ages 55 and older through the arts. Although best known today for his prints and late monotypes\, Gordy worked in a range of media throughout his career. This exhibition\, the first in-depth presentation of the artist’s work at NOMA in over four decades\, shares selections from Gordy’s career from the 1950s until his premature death from AIDS in 1986. \nLearn More \nAbout the Performers\nDJ Nehaya\nNehaya is a New Orleans–born creative with Palestinian roots whose work blends culture\, connection\, and storytelling. A hairstylist\, certified life coach\, and entrepreneur\, she has owned and operated her salon\, Hair Nerds Studio\, for the past seven years while building community through beauty\, conversation\, and art.\n\nA world traveler and lifelong music lover\, Nehaya began curating music during the pandemic as a self-taught selector inspired by global sounds\, emotion\, and human connection. Rather than calling herself a DJ\, she prefers to create sound journeys — weaving together rhythms and stories that move with the energy of the room. Her sets are intuitive\, soulful\, and designed to make people feel present\, connected\, and alive through music.\nLabia Menorah\nLabia Menorah is a New Orleans based irreverent\, party rock klezmer-expansive band. Led by bassist and arranger Klezlie Feinberg\, her rotating group of performers take klezmer classics and spin them into danceable queer bangers. With a distinctly modern and characteristically New Orleans syncretic sound\, the group blends jazz\, noise\, street groove\, jewish mysticism\, & funk in an ever-evolving fusion. The group’s interpretations of traditional yiddish songs\, often centuries old\, situate Klezmer as a living\, breathing practice. Labia Menorah asserts the value of diasporic Jewish culture and embraces the long history of cross-cultural collaboration which has often been sidelined in favor of placing jewish music in a single\, static box. As members of the Palestine Solidarity Network\, the group takes a strong stance in opposition to zionism and the genocide in Palestine\, and rejects the notion of a monolithic ethnonationalist jewish culture. The event also features the “New Orleans-Magic and Protection” fashion show by Massachusetts artist Nikola Janevski\, where he will debut a collection of collage jackets made in collaboration with New Orleans artists during his Solo Residency at Kolaj Institute. \nPresentation: “We Are All Collaborators In Someone Else’s Journey: Robert Rauschenberg & Process” by Carolyn Oliver & Robin Sanford Roberts\n11:15 am to 11:45 AM\nDuring this presentation\, Carolyn E. Oliver (Carlsbad\, California) and Robin Sanford Roberts (San Diego\, California) will present an overview of Rauschenberg’s life\, work\, and process. Oliver will share her experience with fashion designer Jason Wu\, whose 2026 Spring/Summer Fashion Show at the Brooklyn Navy Yard paid homage to Rauschenberg. Rauschenberg’s transfer works were printed on large acrylic panels as the models wove in and out. Oliver wrote\, “Wu’s art of layering and deconstructing fabrics offered the viewers a visual enchantment of distortion and fragmented beauty.” Rauschenberg’s art and Wu’s fashion created a “double document” of global interest. Set designer and professor Robin Sanford Roberts will share views of her theatrical set designs inspired by Rauschenberg. \n “Divas\, Blues\, & Memories: Beau McCall”\n12:00 to 12:30 PM\nNayla Maaruf\, NOMA’s Conservator of Photographs and Works of Art on Paper\, will share her knowledge on disaster preparation at home for family photos and documents\, which also applies to artists with a paper-based practice. DESCRIPTION:Art Thrives invites participants ages 55 and above to an eight-week course led by local multimedia artist LaVonna Varnado Brown. where they will learn about various collaging techniques. \, Each session will teach artists various collaging techniques and allow them to reflect on and create art inspired by African diasporic sculptures and textiles found in NOMA’s African arts collection. Participants will explore themes ranging from archiving and legacies\, naming oneself\, mythological origin stories\, and western ideas of categorization and systems. We will build on the language of each artist’s life and the range and depth of each artist’s practice to develop artworks to be presented at the end of the course. \nThis workshop is $55 for NOMA members and $65 for all other participants. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions\, as the content will build on creating a comprehensive piece. \nPLEASE NOTE: This workshop is sold out. She earned a BA from Southeastern University Louisiana with a focus on Theatre and Liberal Arts. After studying abroad in London and Paris in the summer of 2009\, LaVonna has worked as an installation artist\, artist advocate\, teaching artist\, and tutor in and around New Orleans. \nLaVonna creates mixed media visual art that is AfroFutiristic in aesthetic with odes to history\, the Divine Feminine\, and floral daydreams abounding. AfroFuturism is a cultural aesthetic that explores the intersection of art and history with intention to inspire action in the now by healing beyond trauma. In addition to creating multimedia works\, LaVonna curates intentional workshops and expos with a focus on healing and raising spatial awareness. Through her work she hopes to uplift the narrative of rest\, joy\, resistance\, and abundance. \n\nAbout Art Thrives: Creative Aging at NOMA\nIn 2022\, the New Orleans Museum of Art introduced Art Thrives\, an institutional initiative designed to engage adults ages 55 and older through the arts. DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Teen Book Club is a summer reading and discussion group for teens ages 13-18\, designed to build literary engagement and connect young people to the museum through storytelling\, culture\, and community.  \nTeen Book Club runs from May through August\, with book selections from May through July relating to art and teen interests. DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s book club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in the museum’s collection and exhibitions. \nThis month’s book club selection is George Valentine Dureau: Life and Art in New Orleans\, an expansive and beautiful survey of one of New Orleans’s most accomplished and provocative artists by Howard Philips Smith. \nRegister Now \n\nAbout NOMA’s Book Club\nNOMA’s book club is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to participate. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections.  \nBooks are selected in advance and planned according to the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copy of the titles. For more information or questions\, please email programs@noma.org. \n\nAbout the Book\nGeorge Valentine Dureau: Life and Art in New Orleans\nNew Orleans artist George Valentine Dureau (1930–2014) has always been an enigma. His status as an important artist gained momentum beginning with his first exhibition at the New Orleans Museum of Art\, then the Isaac Delgado Museum of Art\, in the mid-1960s. Not only did his career undergo a meteoric rise\, but his work proved at once controversial and provocative\, nuanced and groundbreaking. Critics and collectors embraced his bold images\, describing them as sexual\, sensual\, exploitative\, erotic\, iconoclastic\, and innovative. Beneath the surface\, Dureau was even more complex as a person and persona\, as he crafted a sensational character out of his artistic acumen. His reputation dimmed after his death\, but in recent years his importance\, and that of the New Orleans art scene he occupied\, has once again been recognized. \nGeorge Valentine Dureau: Life and Art in New Orleans reassembles the pieces of Dureau’s puzzle-work life. The complexity of his life came together in the studio\, where he created some of the most important artworks of the latter twentieth century. This lush publication features 100 large-format photographic plates\, most of which have never been seen or published and surprisingly some in color. There are more than 200 illustrations and two essays to accompany the plates\, along with a special section devoted to the artists and artwork of 1980s New Orleans\, featuring hundreds of additional photographs\, and several appendices of supplementary materials\, such as interview transcripts\, a timeline of Dureau’s life and career\, a map of important locations\, and a section on relevant art publications\, invitations\, and posters. \n-description from University Press of Mississippi \nAbout the Author\nHoward Philips Smith is a writer\, novelist\, and photographer\, known primarily for his historical works\, which focus on expanding the scope of gay history\, especially in New Orleans. He is author of George Valentine Dureau: Life and Art in New Orleans\, Unveiling the Muse: The Lost History of Gay Carnival in New Orleans\, and A Sojourn in Paradise: Jack Robinson in 1950s New Orleans\, all published by University Press of Mississippi. His first novel\, which is a work of historical fiction about the gay community in 1980s New Orleans\, is The Cult of the Mask: The Strange and Delectable Tale of Life Among the Sybarites. His photography was included in Louisiana Lens: Photographs from The Historic New Orleans Collection by John H. Lawrence.

AfroFuturism is a cultural aesthetic that explores the intersection of art and history with intention to inspire action in the now by healing beyond trauma. In addition to creating multimedia works\, LaVonna curates intentional workshops and expos with a focus on healing and raising spatial awareness. Through her work she hopes to uplift the narrative of rest\, joy\, resistance\, and abundance. \n\nAbout Art Thrives: Creative Aging at NOMA\nIn 2022\, the New Orleans Museum of Art introduced Art Thrives\, an institutional initiative designed to engage adults ages 55 and older through the arts.
