Influential photographer Edward Steichen, who is often credited with transforming the medium into a fine art form, was born #OnThisDay in 1879. Steichen began making photographs while he was also painting, and rich textures, like those seen here, are a hallmark of his work. This image from 1914 is thought to be the final photograph Steichen took in France before World War I, during which he commanded the photographic division of the American Expeditionary Forces. In this photograph, the wilting blooms seem to foreshadow future turmoil from the war. — 🎨: Edward J. On Wednesday, February 28, NOMA hosted the retirement celebration for Big Chief Victor Harris, also known as the Spirit of Fi Yi Yi, honoring 59 years as a Black Masking Indian with a night of drumming, words from community leaders and tribe members, film, and food. Harris began masking at the age of 15 as flag boy of the Yellow Pocahontas, led by Big Chief Allison “Tootie” Montana, before becoming Big Chief of his own tribe—the Mandingo Warriors—as the Spirit of Fi Yi Yi 40 years ago. The program at NOMA marked Big Chief Fi Yi Yi’s legacy as the longest continuously masking Black Masking Indian and his distinct impact on the culture and the city. 🔗 Click the link in our bio to read a recap of the program from Director of Education Sara Lowenburg. — 📸: @sheshoots_ ...
