JOB TITLE:    Museum Shop Associate — Full-Time Seasonal
REPORTS TO:  Museum Retail Manager
FLSA STATUS:  Non-Exempt


JOB SUMMARY:  Under the supervision and guidance of the Museum Retail Manager, the Museum Shop Associate is responsible for executing tasks related to consistent day-to-day operations of the Museum Shop.  They will demonstrate an entrepreneurial approach to selling, as well as thorough knowledge of the museum’s mission, exhibitions, collection, programming and merchandise to effectively provide visitors with an exceptional experience.



  • Achieve and exceed sales goals
  • Provide exceptional visitor experience through excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Assist customers with sales
  • Ability to learn and accurately operate a Point of Sale
  • Maintain packaging standards
  • Take orders to be shipped to customers as delegated by the Shop Coordinator
  • Process incoming and outgoing merchandise
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and organized stockroom
  • Provides general information about the museum and exhibits
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends



  • Maintain a positive outlook and ability to think creatively and offer solutions
  • Able to multitask to execute necessary duties to maintain consistent front of house operation
  • Participate in store initiatives as required, including but not limited to filling in of merchandise, recovering sales floor, replenishing stock supply, etc.
  • Must be able to learn, retain and execute merchandising standards on the floor in compliance with visual standards detailed by the Retail Manager
  • Reports comments and feedback from visitors to the Retail Manager and Visitor Experience Manager
  • Promote and sell NOMA membership




  • High school diploma
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact with visitors of all ages, abilities, and economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds


  • Presentation skills and knowledge of best visual and marketing display practices
  • Ability to maintain an in-depth knowledge of the store’s merchandise, its exact location, and its prices
  • Strategic planning skills in regards to setting and achieving sales goals
  • Knowledge of inventory maintenance and ability to communicate needs and gaps
  • Knowledge of sales reports



  • Strong computer skills



  • Ability to lift 35 lbs
  • Ability to be on one’s feet all day



  • Pleasant working environment in a secure indoor setting
