Museum Retail Manager

JOB SUMMARY:  The Museum Retail Manager is responsible for developing and managing retail sales operations to create earned income and raise the New Orleans Museum of Art brand awareness based on attracting visitors to a shopping experience that reflects the mission and values of the Museum. This is a full-time, year-round position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage overall operations of the Museum store
  • Have a visible presence with visitors, volunteers, donors and the Museum community
  • Schedule the staffing of the store to provide for 6-day operation
  • Hire, train and schedule paid and volunteer store staff for all necessary functions
  • Research and purchase inventory sufficient to meet sales goals
  • Arrange store merchandise and merchandising to facilitate sales
  • Develop annual store budget in coordination with Deputy Director of Finance and Administration
  • Maintain vendor files, purchase orders and invoices in an orderly, accurate and accessible manner
  • Ensure daily cash reports are accurate and complete
  • Prepare monthly sales and inventory reports
  • Conduct the year-end physical inventory of the store stock and mid-year inventory if deemed necessary
  • Plan marketing strategies and merchandise selection and displays in relation to museum exhibitions and programs in coordination with the Curators and other appropriate staff
  • Develop and manage e-commerce opportunities in coordination with the DEA team
  • Be available to attend museum store-related conferences/merchandise shows

 ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate with other departments to facilitate special Museum store events
  • Coordinate with other departments to maintain marketing through the NOMA website, Arts Quarterly and email
  • Order supplies for maintenance of the Museum store

 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Train and supervise shop attendants
  • Supervise volunteer staff with volunteer supervisor

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent experience and education
  • 5 -8 years of retail experience
  • Experience supervising staff, creating work schedules and managing volunteers
  • Proven customer service abilities
  • Effectiveoral and written communication
  • Ability to work well with others and take constructive criticism in a team environment
  • Familiarity with POS systems for cash receipts and sales and inventory reporting

SKILLS AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

  • Computer skills – Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with POS systems for cash receipts and sales and inventory reporting
  • Experience with visual design
  • Basic knowledge of art history, fine art and jewelry

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Occasional lifting (up to 35 pounds)

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Retail setting with customer interaction expected daily.
