SUMMARY:Book Club: Libre by Skye Jackson
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s book club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in the museum’s collection and exhibitions. \nThis month’s book club selection is Libre by Skye Jackson\, a soaring collection of poems that deftly explores the familial\, personal\, and societal relationships of a young Black woman trying to make her way in a fraught world. \nRegister Now \n\nAbout NOMA’s Book Club\nNOMA’s book club is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to participate. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections.  \nBooks are selected in advance and planned according to the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copy of the titles. Selections are also available at the NOMA Museum Shop\, where museum members receive a 10% discount. \nMeetings are held in person or via Zoom. All meetings begin at 12 pm. For more information or questions\, please email programs@noma.org. \n\nAbout the Book\nLibre\nFreedom reverberates in Skye Jackson’s breathtaking debut\, Libre\, with evocative poems that are heart-wrenching\, haunting\, sensual\, and tender. This collection explores the experiences of a young Black woman in New Orleans as she navigates the pull of familial and romantic relationships\, celebrating the joys of Blackness\, art\, and friendship. Libre also includes Jackson’s award-winning poem “can we touch your hair?” which was hand selected by former US Poet Laureate Billy Collins for inclusion in the Library of Congress Poetry 180 Project. \nAn acolyte of Sade and Stevie Nicks\, Jackson muses on microaggressions\, interracial relationships\, and the endless intricacies of Black women’s hair as she rails against loss\, random violence\, and the dark expectations that society often places upon people of color. She roams each room of the heart\, open and unafraid of what she might find behind every door. Through it all\, this debut shines as the poetry refracts and reflects like a mirror leaving nothing unseen. \n-description from Simon & Schuster \nAbout the Author\nSkye Jackson is an award-winning writer and editor from New Orleans\, LA\, whose poetry has appeared in The Southern Review\, Rattle\, Green Mountains Review\, and was hand selected by Billy Collins for inclusion in the Library of Congress Poetry 180 Project. In 2023\, she was a finalist for the Iowa Review Poetry Award. She currently teaches at Xavier University.

SUMMARY:Book Club: Counting Descent by Clint Smith
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s book club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in the museum’s collection and exhibitions. \nThis month’s book club selection is Counting Descent\, the debut poetry collection from Clint Smith in which a captivating coming-of-age narrative unfolds–one that challenges\, complicates\, and ultimately enriches our understanding of lineage\, tradition\, and the multifaceted nature of identity. \n\nAbout the Book\nCounting Descent\nWinner\, 2017 Black Caucus of the American Library Association Literary Award – Finalist\, 2017 NAACP Image Awards – One Book One New Orleans 2017 Book Selection \nIn the intricate tapestry of “Counting Descent\,” Clint Smith expertly navigates the nuances of belonging and dissonance. Through his poetic lens\, he guides us through the labyrinthine experience of being part of a community that fiercely and unapologetically celebrates the richness of black humanity. Yet\, this celebration exists in juxtaposition with the world outside\, a world that often distorts blackness into a distorted and unwarranted caricature of fear. \nSmith’s poems move fluidly across personal and political histories\, all the while reflecting on the social construction of our lived experiences. Smith brings the reader on a powerful journey forcing us to reflect on all that we learn growing up\, and all that we seek to unlearn moving forward. \n-description from Write Bloody Publishing \nAbout the Author\nClint Smith is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning With the History of Slavery Across America\, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction\, the Hillman Prize for Book Journalism\, the Stowe Prize\, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize\, and selected by the New York Times as one of the 10 Best Books of 2021. He is also the author of two books of poetry\, the New York Times bestselling collection Above Ground as well as Counting Descent. Both poetry collections were winners of the Literary Award for Best Poetry Book from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association and both were finalists for NAACP Image Awards. He is a staff writer at The Atlantic. \nClint has received fellowships from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation\, New America\, the Emerson Collective\, the Art For Justice Fund\, Cave Canem\, and the National Science Foundation. His essays\, poems\, and scholarly writing have been published in The New Yorker\, The New York Times Magazine\, The New Republic\, Poetry Magazine\, The Paris Review\, the Harvard Educational Review\, and elsewhere. He is a former National Poetry Slam champion and a recipient of the Jerome J. Shestack Prize from the American Poetry Review. \nPreviously\, Clint taught high school English in Prince George’s County\, Maryland\, where he was named the Christine D. Sarbanes Teacher of the Year by the Maryland Humanities Council. He is the host of the YouTube series Crash Course Black American History. \nClint received his B.A. in English from Davidson College and his Ph.D. in Education from Harvard University. Born and raised in New Orleans\, he currently lives in Maryland with his wife and their two children.

A proud Louisianan with roots both in North Louisiana and the bayous of the south\, Wiley’s earliest memories are flavored with food\, family gatherings\, and the warmth of the Kitchen. \nWiley’s passion for food began at the age of four\, inspired by her grandfather\, Carl Wiley Jones\, also a chef\, who first taught her how to make his famous pain perdu (French toast). Known to her as “Big Daddy\,” he and her grandmother\, Carolyn “Aimeé” Jones\, hosted lively holiday parties filled with homemade eggnog\, live music\, and unforgettable desserts\, like his signature rocky road brownies. Those joyful\, food-filled memories continue to guide Wiley’s culinary path today. \nShe grew up along Caddo Lake\, surrounded by family\, nature\, and Louisiana’s rich outdoor traditions – from hunting with her father to weekends at fishing camps in Grand Chenier and in Pecan Island\, Little Chenier. Whether cracking pecans from her backyard tree or cracking/scrambling eggs one-handed at the age of seven\, food has always been second nature to her. \nAfter high school\, Wiley followed her passion from Shreveport to New Orleans\, with stops in Lafayette and Baton Rouge along the way. Her culinary journey began in earnest in 2012 when she joined the Besh Restaurant Group at Restaurant Borgne. From there\, she worked across several BRG restaurants\, including August and Domenica\, gaining experience in pastry\, bartending\, management\, and more. She played a key role in the opening of Willa Jean\, collaborating with chefs like Kelly Fields and Lisa White to bring their visions to life. \nAfter taking a break from the restaurant world to focus on family\, Wiley returned to food through a different lens\, working as a fishmonger\, sales rep\, and social media manager with Inland Foods. Through personal challenges\, including the loss of her beloved mother in 2022 and a divorce the same year\, Wiley found strength and healing through food\, community\, and her deep Louisiana roots. Now\, she returns full-circle to BRG\, bringing her heart\, heritage\, and culinary voice to Delacroix\, where she celebrates the flavors\, stories\, and soulful spirit of South Louisiana. \n“I believe food is storytelling\,” Wiley says. “It connects us\, grounds us\, and brings us home. Let’s share a meal\, swap stories\, and create something memorable together.” \nMore event details available soon. Please check this page for updates. \n\nSponsorship Levels and Benefits\nLearn about sponsorship levels and become a sponsor for both Salon Supper Club events in 2026. \nFor sponsorship inquiries and questions about the Salon Supper Club\, please email salonsupperclub@noma.org or call 504.658.4121. \n$25\,000 | Platinum Sponsor\n\n24 Patron Tickets to the Summer Salon\, 12 Tickets to the Fall Salon and a reserved tables for both events                \n Recognition as a Sponsor with name or logo in all press materials \n Recognition as a Sponsor at all NOMA Salon Supper Club events \n Invitations to exhibition patron preview openings during 2026/2027 \n Sponsor recognition on 2\,500 invitations; on www.noma.org with over 70\,000 monthly hits; postings to an average monthly Facebook reach of 400\,000; and an Instagram following of over 69\,000; and e-blasts to nearly 40\,000 subscribers.
