SUMMARY:Tai Chi in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden Every Wednesday
DESCRIPTION:Experience wellness at NOMA with beginner-friendly\, outdoor tai chi classes in the serene Besthoff Sculpture Garden. The first 30 minutes of class focus on simple celestial elemental Qigong forms\, a gentle and accessible style of movement suitable for anyone. The second part of class explores progressive sequential movements from the “Tai Chi Easy” form developed by Roger Jahnke\, O.M.D.\, director of Integral Institute of Tai Chi and Qigong Center.  \nIn many martial\, exercise\, healing\, and meditative traditions\, attainment is the central aim. Our invitation is something different: to release\, through the spirit of play\, any obstruction that separates us from well being and harmony.  \nClass is $5 for members and $10 for the general public. Tai chi participants meet at the garden entrance on the corner of Collins Diboll Circle and Enrique Alferez Drive\, across the street from Café NOMA. Please bring a digital or printed version of your ticket to class. Walk-ins are welcome and can pay with cash. If you are a member paying in cash\, please also bring your membership card or member number. \nREGISTER NOW \nFor Monday classes: register online by 3pm the day of class. \nFor Wednesday classes: register online by 3pm on the Tuesday before class. \nThese classes are outside and will be canceled for severe weather. SUMMARY:Purpose and Pedagogy: The Enduring Legacy of Hayward Oubre
DESCRIPTION:College students and educators are invited to join us for a special gallery tour and discussion focused on the exhibition Hayward Oubre: Structural Integrity. \nOubre shaped art in the United States not only as an innovative artist\, but also as a distinguished educator at two prominent HBCUs. He served as the first chair of the art department at Alabama State University (ASU) in Montgomery\, from 1949 to 1965. After leaving ASU\, Oubre established the art department at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) in North Carolina\, building on the legacy he shaped at ASU.  \nAt “Purpose and Pedagogy: The Enduring Legacy of Hayward Oubre\,” guests will learn about the artist Hayward Oubre’s impact as both a working artist and arts educator. Through a guided tour of the exhibition and a post-tour discussion with NOMA’s Chief Curator and the curator of the exhibition at NOMA\, Anne Collins Smith\, moderated by two students of Dillard University\, guests will explore how Oubre’s legacy as a working artist and arts educator have impacted their experience in art classrooms. \nThis discussion is intended for currently-enrolled college and university students\, as well as college and university educators\, only. SUMMARY:Yoga in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden Every Wednesday
DESCRIPTION:Experience wellness at NOMA with beginner-friendly\, outdoor yoga classes in the serene Besthoff Sculpture Garden. Classes take place every Saturday morning and (beginning in late February 2026) every Wednesday evening. The instructor for this class is Donna Roubal. \nClass is $5 for members and $10 for the general public. Enter at the main entrance gate to the Sculpture Garden on Dueling Oaks Drive. Please bring your own mat and a digital or printed version of your ticket to class. Walk-ins are welcome and can pay with cash. If you are a member paying in cash\, please bring your membership card or member number. \nREGISTER NOW \nFor Saturday Classes: register online by 3 pm the Friday before class. \nFor Wednesday Classes: register online by 3 pm the Tuesday before class. \nThese classes are outside and will be canceled for severe weather. Registrants will be notified of cancellation via email by 5 pm the day before class. Call 504.658.4128 or email education@noma.org with any questions. \n\nAbout the Instructor\nDonna Roubal is a dynamic multidisciplined instructor of many genres of fitness including yoga\, mat pilates\, reformer pilates\, yogalates\, personal training\, zumba\, bodypump\, cycle\, rpm\, aerobics\, step aerobics\, kickboxing\, as well as aquatics and numerous avenues of fitness through multiple sports. Roubal enjoys teaching a combination of Vinyasa flow and Hatha yoga. She loves finding the freedom of movement that yoga provides for the ultimate mind/body experience.

SUMMARY:Art Thrives: Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Art Thrives invites participants ages 55 and above to an eight-week course led by local multimedia artist LaVonna Varnado Brown. where they will learn about various collaging techniques. \, Each session will teach artists various collaging techniques and allow them to reflect on and create art inspired by African diasporic sculptures and textiles found in NOMA’s African arts collection. Participants will explore themes ranging from archiving and legacies\, naming oneself\, mythological origin stories\, and western ideas of categorization and systems. We will build on the language of each artist’s life and the range and depth of each artist’s practice to develop artworks to be presented at the end of the course. \nThis workshop is $55 for NOMA members and $65 for all other participants. She earned a BA from Southeastern University Louisiana with a focus on Theatre and Liberal Arts. After studying abroad in London and Paris in the summer of 2009\, LaVonna has worked as an installation artist\, artist advocate\, teaching artist\, and tutor in and around New Orleans. \nLaVonna creates mixed media visual art that is AfroFutiristic in aesthetic with odes to history\, the Divine Feminine\, and floral daydreams abounding. AfroFuturism is a cultural aesthetic that explores the intersection of art and history with intention to inspire action in the now by healing beyond trauma. In addition to creating multimedia works\, LaVonna curates intentional workshops and expos with a focus on healing and raising spatial awareness. Through her work she hopes to uplift the narrative of rest\, joy\, resistance\, and abundance. \n\nAbout Art Thrives: Creative Aging at NOMA\nIn 2022\, the New Orleans Museum of Art introduced Art Thrives\, an institutional initiative designed to engage adults ages 55 and older through the arts. SUMMARY:Teen Book Club 2026
DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s Teen Book Club is a summer reading and discussion group for teens ages 13-18\, designed to build literary engagement and connect young people to the museum through storytelling\, culture\, and community.  \nTeen Book Club runs from May through August\, with book selections from May through July relating to art and teen interests. In August\, just in time for back to school season\, our Teen Book Club selection will be a book that is included on the Louisiana English Language Arts required reading list. \nTeen Book Club meetings will take place on Fridays from 1-2 pm. Participants can join in person in the Art Studio located on NOMA’s second floor\, or via Zoom. \nThis program is free for all participants. You must be between the ages of 13 and 18 to participate. An 1890 philosophical fiction and Gothic horror novel about a handsome young man who becomes obsessed with his own beauty.
