DESCRIPTION:Experience wellness at NOMA with beginner friendly\, outdoor yoga classes in the serene Besthoff Sculpture Garden. Classes take place every Saturday morning and (beginning in late February 2026) every Wednesday evening. The instructor for this class is Sara Lyon. \nClass is $5 for members and $10 for the general public. Enter at the main entrance gate to the Sculpture Garden on Dueling Oaks Drive. Please bring your own mat and a digital or printed version of your ticket to class. Walk-ins are welcome and can pay with cash. If you are a member paying in cash\, please bring your membership card or member number. \nREGISTER NOW \nFor Saturday Classes: register online by 3pm the Friday before class. \nFor Wednesday Classes: register online by 3pm the Tuesday before class. \nThese classes are outside and will be canceled for severe weather. Call 504.658.4128 or email education@noma.org with any questions. \n\nAbout the Instructor\nSara Lyon\, LPC-S RYT ‘03\, teaches an eclectic “slow flow” integrating dynamics in breath work\, mindfulness\, balance\, strength and flexibility. Lyon pulls from various teaching styles to create predictable sequencing that allows for attunement; practicing discomfort with alignment and breath for increased capacity.

The second part of class explores progressive sequential movements from the “Tai Chi Easy” form developed by Roger Jahnke\, O.M.D.\, director of Integral Institute of Tai Chi and Qigong Center.  \nIn many martial\, exercise\, healing\, and meditative traditions\, attainment is the central aim. Our invitation is something different: to release\, through the spirit of play\, any obstruction that separates us from well being and harmony.  \nClass is $5 for members and $10 for the general public. Tai chi participants meet at the garden entrance on the corner of Collins Diboll Circle and Enrique Alferez Drive\, across the street from Café NOMA. Please bring a digital or printed version of your ticket to class. Walk-ins are welcome and can pay with cash. DESCRIPTION:NOMA’s book club meets monthly to discuss fiction and non-fiction books related to art in the museum’s collection and exhibitions. \nThis month’s book club selection is George Valentine Dureau: Life and Art in New Orleans\, an expansive and beautiful survey of one of New Orleans’s most accomplished and provocative artists by Howard Philips Smith. \nRegister Now \n\nAbout NOMA’s Book Club\nNOMA’s book club is an informal group open to anyone on a month-to-month basis. You do not have to attend every meeting or read every book to participate. In addition to monthly book discussions\, the book club meets periodically for curatorial programs related to the book selections.  \nBooks are selected in advance and planned according to the museum’s exhibition schedule. Participants are expected to procure their own copy of the titles. For more information or questions\, please email programs@noma.org. \n\nAbout the Book\nGeorge Valentine Dureau: Life and Art in New Orleans\nNew Orleans artist George Valentine Dureau (1930–2014) has always been an enigma. His status as an important artist gained momentum beginning with his first exhibition at the New Orleans Museum of Art\, then the Isaac Delgado Museum of Art\, in the mid-1960s. Not only did his career undergo a meteoric rise\, but his work proved at once controversial and provocative\, nuanced and groundbreaking. Critics and collectors embraced his bold images\, describing them as sexual\, sensual\, exploitative\, erotic\, iconoclastic\, and innovative. Beneath the surface\, Dureau was even more complex as a person and persona\, as he crafted a sensational character out of his artistic acumen. His reputation dimmed after his death\, but in recent years his importance\, and that of the New Orleans art scene he occupied\, has once again been recognized. \nGeorge Valentine Dureau: Life and Art in New Orleans reassembles the pieces of Dureau’s puzzle-work life. The complexity of his life came together in the studio\, where he created some of the most important artworks of the latter twentieth century. This lush publication features 100 large-format photographic plates\, most of which have never been seen or published and surprisingly some in color. There are more than 200 illustrations and two essays to accompany the plates\, along with a special section devoted to the artists and artwork of 1980s New Orleans\, featuring hundreds of additional photographs\, and several appendices of supplementary materials\, such as interview transcripts\, a timeline of Dureau’s life and career\, a map of important locations\, and a section on relevant art publications\, invitations\, and posters. \n-description from University Press of Mississippi \nAbout the Author\nHoward Philips Smith is a writer\, novelist\, and photographer\, known primarily for his historical works\, which focus on expanding the scope of gay history\, especially in New Orleans. SUMMARY:Art Thrives: Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Art Thrives invites participants ages 55 and above to an eight-week course led by local multimedia artist LaVonna Varnado Brown. where they will learn about various collaging techniques. \, Each session will teach artists various collaging techniques and allow them to reflect on and create art inspired by African diasporic sculptures and textiles found in NOMA’s African arts collection. Participants will explore themes ranging from archiving and legacies\, naming oneself\, mythological origin stories\, and western ideas of categorization and systems. We will build on the language of each artist’s life and the range and depth of each artist’s practice to develop artworks to be presented at the end of the course. \nThis workshop is $55 for NOMA members and $65 for all other participants. She earned a BA from Southeastern University Louisiana with a focus on Theatre and Liberal Arts. After studying abroad in London and Paris in the summer of 2009\, LaVonna has worked as an installation artist\, artist advocate\, teaching artist\, and tutor in and around New Orleans. \nLaVonna creates mixed media visual art that is AfroFutiristic in aesthetic with odes to history\, the Divine Feminine\, and floral daydreams abounding. AfroFuturism is a cultural aesthetic that explores the intersection of art and history with intention to inspire action in the now by healing beyond trauma. In addition to creating multimedia works\, LaVonna curates intentional workshops and expos with a focus on healing and raising spatial awareness. Through her work she hopes to uplift the narrative of rest\, joy\, resistance\, and abundance. \n\nAbout Art Thrives: Creative Aging at NOMA\nIn 2022\, the New Orleans Museum of Art introduced Art Thrives\, an institutional initiative designed to engage adults ages 55 and older through the arts. SUMMARY:Art Thrives: Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Art Thrives invites participants ages 55 and above to an eight-week course led by local multimedia artist LaVonna Varnado Brown. where they will learn about various collaging techniques. \, Each session will teach artists various collaging techniques and allow them to reflect on and create art inspired by African diasporic sculptures and textiles found in NOMA’s African arts collection. Participants will explore themes ranging from archiving and legacies\, naming oneself\, mythological origin stories\, and western ideas of categorization and systems. We will build on the language of each artist’s life and the range and depth of each artist’s practice to develop artworks to be presented at the end of the course. \nThis workshop is $55 for NOMA members and $65 for all other participants. She earned a BA from Southeastern University Louisiana with a focus on Theatre and Liberal Arts. After studying abroad in London and Paris in the summer of 2009\, LaVonna has worked as an installation artist\, artist advocate\, teaching artist\, and tutor in and around New Orleans. \nLaVonna creates mixed media visual art that is AfroFutiristic in aesthetic with odes to history\, the Divine Feminine\, and floral daydreams abounding. AfroFuturism is a cultural aesthetic that explores the intersection of art and history with intention to inspire action in the now by healing beyond trauma. In addition to creating multimedia works\, LaVonna curates intentional workshops and expos with a focus on healing and raising spatial awareness. Through her work she hopes to uplift the narrative of rest\, joy\, resistance\, and abundance. \n\nAbout Art Thrives: Creative Aging at NOMA\nIn 2022\, the New Orleans Museum of Art introduced Art Thrives\, an institutional initiative designed to engage adults ages 55 and older through the arts.
