Growing up visiting the Art Institute of Chicago\, Rosales was captivated by Renaissance painting – but years later\, her daughter’s simple observation that “they don’t look like me” exposed the exclusion at the heart of that tradition. That moment sparked Rosales’s artistic journey: reimagining Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces with Black protagonists and centering West African tradition.\n\nShe lives in Los Angeles\, CA.\n\nCCH Pounder\nActress and art collector CCH Pounder \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAward-winning actress CCH Pounder has been extensively involved with the arts as a patron\, collector\, gallery owner and museum founder. Ms. Pounder’s Collection consists of Caribbean and African artists and artists of the African Diaspora. The Collection\, which comprises over 500 pieces\, is heavily concentrated in the area of Contemporary Art but also includes traditional African sculptures. In 1992\, Ms. Pounder and her husband\, the late Boubacar Koné\, founded and built the Musée Boribana\, the first privately owned contemporary museum in Dakar Senegal\, which they gifted to that nation in 2014.  Numerous exhibits have been mounted featuring pieces from Ms. Pounder’s Collection including The Charles G. Wright Museum of African History in Detroit\, the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center in Chicago\, the African American Museum in Philadelphia and the African Diaspora Art Museum of Atlanta. Other loans & exhibits have included the National Portrait Gallery in London\, Xavier University in New Orleans\, Kent State Museum\, Spelman College Museum of Art and Memphis Brooks Museum of Art\, among many others. \nChronicles of Ori: An African Epic\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nIn Chronicles of Ori\, her debut book\, Harmonia Rosales retells the African myths she has long treasured\, crafting an enthralling epic that spans the birth of the universe to the modern world of colonialism and resistance. She writes of the powerful\, temperamental deities called the Orishas; of the founding of Yorubaland by the shrewd leader Oduduwa; of the young heroine Eve\, born in a time of violence and despair\, who would help her people regain their past splendor; and of shimmering serpents and monstrous shadows who stalk the lands of mortals. At the center of these linked tales is the bond\, sometimes fraying\, between the Orishas and the humans who worship them. It was the Orishas who made humans\, and who gave them their most precious resource: their Oris\, or destinies. DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Lapis Center for the Arts for a screening of Kira Akerman’s award-winning documentary Hollow Tree\, followed by a conversation with the film’s leading protagonists Mekenzie Fanguy\, Annabelle Pavy\, and Tanielma DaCosta (moderated by Kimbrielle Boult\, NOMA’s Community Engagement Coordinator) on the creation and impact of the film. \nHollow Tree follows three teenagers coming of age in their sinking homeland of Louisiana. For the first time\, they notice the Mississippi River’s engineering\, stumps of cypress trees\, and billowing smokestacks. Their different perspectives—as Indigenous\, white\, and Angolan young women—shape their story of the climate crisis. \nThis program is free and open to the public. Registration is highly encouraged. \nREGISTER NOW \nAbout the Film\nStill from “Hollow Tree” by Kira Ackerman \nHollow Tree\, a 73-minute award-winning documentary directed by Kira Akerman and produced by Monique Walton and Chachi Hauser\, invites three young women to learn with the director\, filmmaking team\, and their respective communities. Mekenzie Fanguy (Houma\, Louisiana) was born on coastal bayous and is a member of the United Houma Nation; Annabelle Pavy (Lafayette\, Louisiana) is from a mostly white community\, where climate change is largely viewed as a myth; and Tanielma DaCosta (Baton Rouge\, Louisiana) immigrated from Angola\, Africa when she was 6. They travel to different sites along the Mississippi River\, where they engage in dialogue with engineers\, activists\, and Indigenous leaders. As these young women notice their surroundings\, they begin to imagine Louisiana’s past—its history of slavery\, Indigenous dispossession\, and colonization—and\, by extension\, Louisiana’s future\, which they will experience and help to shape. Many of Hollow Tree’s screenings include accompanying learning experiences for audiences\, which have been created in partnership with the Climate Museum\, Columbia’s Climate School\, the Museum of the Moving Image\, the University of Mississippi\, and the Small Center at Tulane University. \nKira Akerman is a documentary filmmaker and educator. Her film Hollow Tree won a Jury Prize at the New Orleans Film Festival\, and an award for Best Documentary at Chicago’s International Children’s Festival. Her work has been supported by the International Documentary Association\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Sundance Institute\, the Redford Center\, and others. Kira received the 2019 PBS Wyncote Fellowship\, the 2019 Sundance Talent Forum Fellowship\, the 2020 Gotham Documentary Lab\, and the 2021 Climate Story Lab. Her short films have been featured in The Atlantic\, The Newcomb Art Museum at Tulane University\, the Ford Foundation Gallery\, the Camden International Film Festival\, MOMA\, the Rotterdam Film Festival\, Clermont-Ferrand\, and others. Kira has collaborated extensively with Ripple Effect\, a New Orleans based water literacy educational nonprofit\, and the former Center for the Gulf South at Tulane University\, an interdisciplinary\, place-based institute that promotes the understanding of New Orleans and the Gulf South region. She is currently a fellow at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Studies at Harvard University. \nTanielma DaCosta is one of the three protagonists of Hollow Tree. She was born in Angola and raised in Baton Rouge\, LA. She is a senior at Louisiana State University studying computer & electrical engineering\, international studies\, and French. Along with being an environmental educator\, she is developing sustainable battery technology as a member of the Nano Electronic Structures and Technology Lab led by Dr. Theda Daniels-Race. \nAnabelle Pavy Born in Lafayette\, Louisiana\, Annbelle grew up in a household of artists. Her childhood was filled with creativity and exploration. When Annabelle first met Kira Akerman of Hollow Tree\, she was 16. During the project\, Annabelle solidified her love for community and culture\, and today\, based in New Orleans\, she uses her creative skills to work with organizations and individuals interested in the betterment of her community.\n\nMekenzie Fanguy Born and raised in Houma\, Louisiana\, Mekenzie Fanguy is 24 years old. She is one of the three protagonists of the film Hallow Tree.  She is a student at Nicholls University studying business administration. She is set to graduate next year.\n

Since opening in 1973\, A Gallery for Fine Photography has become the longest continual operational gallery dedicated to fine art photography in the United States. Pailet has shepherded photographs into countless public and private collections\, including the New Orleans Museum of Art. His own work behind the camera is also counted among important institutional collections throughout the country. \nOn Wednesday\, December 10\, join us at NOMA for a special screening of the new documentary film Chasing the Light: A Life Through Photographs\, celebrating the life and career of Pailet. DESCRIPTION:NOMA and the Congo Square Preservation Society present the Elders Sacred Talk Series with prolific elder New Orleanians\, celebrating the lives they lead while providing the opportunity for visitors to learn firsthand about the impact they’ve had on our city. This conversation with Spyboy Ricky Getteridge will be moderated by Nana Sula Evans. \nCome out to celebrate Spyboy Ricky and the Black Masking Indian Tradition for the last installment of the Elders Sacred Talk Series for 2025. Please bring your tambourines and a spirit of celebration as we gather to honor our elders. \n\nThis program is included with museum admission\, which is free for Louisiana residents every Wednesday courtesy of The Helis Foundation’s Art for All initiative.\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\nSpyboy Ricky Getteridge\n \n\nSpyboy Ricky Getteridge is a prominent figure in the New Orleans Black Masking Indian community and an active voice in preserving and sharing the history of the New Orleans Black Masking tradition. Getteridge first masked with his father\, and later with the Yellow Pocahontas tribe under Big Chief Tootie Montana and with The Spirit of Fi-Yi-Yi – Mandingo Warriors under Big Chief Victor Harris. As “Spyboy\,” he was traditionally responsible for forging ahead of the tribe to scout out the path and look for other tribes\, which is a significant role within the tribe and community. He is also an original member of the Bucket Men Social Aid and Pleasure Club. Getteridge is a well-known and highly respected community member whose image has been captured and exhibited worldwide by local\, national\, and international photographers. He has been interviewed across local media channels to discuss the evolution of his suits from spangles and bells in the 1960s and 70s to the modern\, complex beadwork and African-centered motifs he wears today \n\n\n\n\nAbout Elders Sacred Talks and Art Thrives\nNOMA’s Art Thrives initiative presents creative aging programs designed to support visitors ages 55 and up. In addition to art-making workshops\, courses\, and opportunities for hands-on art-making\, the Elders Sacred Talk Series provides a platform for older adults in New Orleans to share their experiences with audiences of all ages. \nThe Elders Sacred Talk Series is presented in partnership between NOMA and the Congo Square Preservation Society. SUMMARY:Lecture | "Here in This Place": Developing Place-Based Awareness through Land and Labor Acknowledgements
DESCRIPTION:Join us in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts for a conversation on the importance of Land and Labor acknowledgments with Sherry Parfait & Solomon Matthews\, moderated by Queen Mother Sula. \nRecognizing our connections to the land and to one another is essential in fostering a sense of community\, allowing us to navigate a shared awareness of place. The land bridges our imagined past with our experiences in the present. Much of the success of Louisiana today is founded not only on the forced labor of enslaved people\, but also on the generations of experience and knowledge of indigenous nations and communities in this area. The practice of developing and using a Land Acknowledgment statement is to meaningfully recognize the original inhabitants of a location\, their experiences of forced removal\, and the dispossession of their ancestral homelands. Similarly\, a Labor Acknowledgment statement reminds us that much of the economic progress and development we see today has often been built upon the unpaid labor and forced servitude of enslaved people.  \nThis featured lecture inspired by the current special exhibitions Dawoud Bey: Elegy & Nicolas Floc’h: Fleuves-Océan\, Mississippi Watershed will explore how acknowledgment fosters community\, accountability\, and a shared awareness of place.  \nDoors open at 5:00 pm. The lecture starts at 5:30 pm\, followed by a Q&A. \nThis program is free and open to all. Seating is first come first served\, advance registration is suggested. \nREGISTER HERE \n\nAbout the Speakers and Moderator\nSherry Parfait\n \nSherry Parfait is an enrolled citizen of the United Houma Nation (UHN)\, Louisiana’s largest Indigenous Tribe\, and she has been a New Orleans resident for seven years. She provides public relations and marketing services to the UHN and serves as the Editor of the UHN Quarterly\, the Nation’s newspaper. She also works for Gordon Arata Montgomery Barnett\, a full-service law firm in downtown New Orleans\, where she provides administrative and marketing support and serves as Co-Chair of the firm’s Diversity Committee. Sherry is a Chips Quinn Scholar and a member of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI)\, and she is Vice President of the New Orleans Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). She is also working on a Master’s degree in Marketing & Communications at Loyola University. \n  \nSolomon Matthews\n \nBorn in Mid-City New Orleans at Charity Hospital and raised in Kenner\, Louisiana\, Solomon Matthews is a dedicated educator\, advisor\, and cultural advocate. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Northwestern State University of Louisiana and a master’s degree in Education from the University of Southern California. \nSolomon’s professional career spans academic and career advising\, as well as leadership in new student and family programs within higher education settings. After returning home to New Orleans\, he transitioned into community-based arts and cultural work\, first serving as the Community Programs Director at Ashé Cultural Arts Center and now as its Program Officer. He also teaches as an adjunct faculty member in Delgado Community College’s Adult Education program.
