SUMMARY:Purpose and Pedagogy: The Enduring Legacy of Hayward Oubre
DESCRIPTION:College students and educators are invited to join us for a special gallery tour and discussion focused on the exhibition Hayward Oubre: Structural Integrity. \nOubre shaped art in the United States not only as an innovative artist\, but also as a distinguished educator at two prominent HBCUs. He served as the first chair of the art department at Alabama State University (ASU) in Montgomery\, from 1949 to 1965. After leaving ASU\, Oubre established the art department at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) in North Carolina\, building on the legacy he shaped at ASU.  \nAt “Purpose and Pedagogy: The Enduring Legacy of Hayward Oubre\,” guests will learn about the artist Hayward Oubre’s impact as both a working artist and arts educator. Through a guided tour of the exhibition and a post-tour discussion with NOMA’s Chief Curator and the curator of the exhibition at NOMA\, Anne Collins Smith\, moderated by two students of Dillard University\, guests will explore how Oubre’s legacy as a working artist and arts educator have impacted their experience in art classrooms. \nThis discussion is intended for currently-enrolled college and university students\, as well as college and university educators\, only. This gallery talk will be held at 12:30 pm and 6:00 pm.   \nThis talk is included with museum admission\, which is free for Louisiana residents every Wednesday courtesy of The Helis Foundation‘s Art for All initiative.  \n\nAbout MaPó Kinnord \nMaPó Kinnord grew up in Cleveland\, Ohio. She received her first training in ceramics through Cleveland’s Quaker-founded alternative high school\, the School on Magnolia. She apprenticed with several production potters before receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1984. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1994. Arriving in New Orleans in 1995\, she now serves as a Professor of Art at Xavier University. A well-respected educator\, Kinnord has taught workshops at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine and the Penland School of Craft in North Carolina\, as well as the Kambe no Sato Arts Center in Matsue\, Japan. She has researched the traditional and contemporary art of Ghana and has produced video documentation of the traditional pottery\, kiln building and ceramic architecture of Northern Ghana\, West Africa.

Her musical journey began early\, performing traditional and early music around the world with her family and studying classical piano in Barcelona and Havana under Professor Teresa Junco. Known for her versatility\, Albero blends jazz\, flamenco\, early music\, and Afro-Cuban rhythms into a distinctive and expressive style.\n\n\nIn addition to her performing career\, Albero is a passionate educator\, having taught at Cornish College of the Arts and Western Washington University. Her latest album\, A Nomad of Sound (2024)\, recorded in New Orleans\, reflects her evolving artistic voice and was awarded the Golden Ear “Album of the Year.”\n\nSee All Upcoming Gallery Talks

SUMMARY:Roberto Lugo Lecture
DESCRIPTION:NOMA is excited to welcome Roberto Lugo to NOMA for a lecture in NOMA’s Lapis Center for the Arts. \nBest known for cultural mash-ups that blend contemporary social issues with traditional porcelain pottery\, Philadelphia-based artist Roberto Lugo’s powerful commentary on poverty\, inequality\, and racial injustice has made him a defining artist for our moment.In 2019\, the New Orleans Museum of Art commissioned Lugo to create Stunting\, a set of three ceramic pots inspired by NOMA’s collection.  This spring\, the artist returns to NOMA to discuss this work and his overall ceramics practice.  \nThe lecture is at 6 pm\, and doors open at 5:30 pm. \nThis program is free with museum admission\, which is free for Louisiana residents every Wednesday courtesy of The Helis Foundation’s Art for All initiative. Registration is recommended to help us plan for probable attendance numbers. Registration does not guarantee a physical seat for the program\, as seating is first come\, first served. \nRegister Now \n\nAbout Roberto Lugo\n \nRoberto Lugo is a Philadelphia-based artist\, social activist\, poet\, and educator. Lugo utilizes traditional ceramic techniques in conjunction with portraiture and surface design reminiscent of his Kensington upbringing and Hip Hop culture to highlight themes of poverty\, inequality\, and racial injustice. He is the recipient of numerous awards\, including a 2019 Pew Fellowship\, a Cynthia Hazen Polsky and Leon Polsky Rome Prize\, and a US Artist Award. His work is found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, The High Museum of Art\, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston\, Brooklyn Museum\, Walters Art Museum\, and more. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia\, PA.

This week\, join Creative Assembly alum Kr3wcial for a gallery talk the ‘Stunting’ Garniture Set (2019) by Roberto Lugo\, a work commissioned by NOMA from the artist in 2019. This gallery talk will be held at 12:30 in the second floor decorative arts galleries  in celebration of Roberto Lugo’s Lecture later that same evening.   \nThis talk is included with museum admission\, which is free for Louisiana residents every Wednesday courtesy of The Helis Foundation‘s Art for All initiative.

During these tours\, you’ll learn about a selection of the 100 large-scale works installed in the garden. \nNo registration is required. NOMA’s Besthoff Sculpture Garden is free and open to all\, seven days a week. Tours start at the main entrance gate to the Besthoff Sculpture Garden on Dueling Oaks Drive.
