French conceptualist Camille Henrot is a rising star on the international art scene. She won the Silver Lion award for promising young artists at the 2013 Venice Biennale the most prestigious art exhibition in the world. Her first U.S. exhibition “Camille Henrot: Cities of Ys” opens with a reception and artist lecture at The New Orleans Museum of Art Friday (Oct. 11) from 5 to 9 p.m.

The concept of Henrot's custom-made NOMA exhibition is intriguing. Using video and sculpture, she plans to poetically compare the heritage of the south Louisiana Houma Indians with a folkloric French coastal city called Ys that disappeared beneath the ocean when a princess stole the magical key to the levee gate. Henrot will discuss her installation Friday (Oct. 11) from 6 to 7 p.m.

Friday's opening also includes free art activities, live music by Sarah Quintana, a lecture by Asian arts curator Lisa Rotondo-McCord on "Chinese Jades From the Cohn Collection," and a gift shop reception for New Orleans jewelry and sculpture master Thomas Mann.

NOMA is located at the end of Esplanade Avenue in City Park. Visit or call 504.658.4100.
