Education
The Education Division at NOMA is dedicated to
awakening the imaginations of children and
adults through the visual arts. The Museum
provides memorable art experiences which lead to
greater awareness, curiosity and sensitivity.
Through a variety of ongoing educational
programs, NOMA has established itself as one of
the greatest resources for art educators in the
Greater New Orleans area and throughout
Louisiana.
For information about scheduling tours or outreach programs, please contact the Education Department

School tour information:
NOMA offers docent-guided tours of its permanent collection and special exhibitions for students in grades 1
through 12. All of the tours below will incorporate objects in various media selected from several different
areas of NOMA's collection, including African Art; Native American Art; Dutch, French, and Italian painting;
glass and decorative arts; the arts of Japan and China; and modern and 20th century art and sculpture.
- NOMA Masterworks: 2000 Years of Art
This tour will introduce students of all grade levels to the extraordinary collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art and can be customized to accommodate
individual groups and interests. For grades 1-12; especially appropriate for first-time visitors to the Museum.
- Learning to Look: The ABCs of Art
Students will be introduced to the elements of art, including line, texture, color, movement, and shape. Students will discuss how artists use each of
these elements to create works of art. For grades 1-12; especially appropriate for first-time visitors to the Museum.
- Everyday Life
How can art help us understand how people lived their lives in times and places far removed from our own? This tour will look at works of art from
different time periods and cultures and help students examine how their own experiences relate to them. For grades 1-8.
- Artists, People and Portraits
Portraits often tell us as much about their subjects as they do about the artists who create them. How do artists choose to depict their subjects?
What do patrons want their portraits to look like? This tour will examine how portraits reflect changing values in different cultures and time periods. For grades 5-12.
- What's The Story? Telling Stories With Art
Many works of art at NOMA illustrate historical events, episodes from works of literature, famous stories, myths, and legends. Through careful
looking at these works, we will figure out what kinds of stories artists tell in their works - and come up with a few stories of our own. For grades 1-8.
Tour slots are available Wednesdays from 11:15 AM through 12:45 PM and on Thursdays and Fridays from 9:15 AM through 10:45 AM. Each tour slot
can accommodate between 35 and 50 students depending on grade level. Custom tour subjects tailored to classroom curricula are also available
upon request and with sufficient advance notice.
Fees for school tours are as follows:
- There is NO CHARGE for students (grades 1-12) from Louisiana schools when booked on a school group visit.
- NOMA requires one adult chaperone per every five students booked on a school group tour. There is no charge for this required number of chaperones.
- In order to ensure an optimal tour experience for both students and docents, NOMA does not encourage additional chaperones for school
groups beyond the ratio described above (i.e., one adult chaperone for every five students). Additional chaperones beyond the 1 to 5 ratio will
be charged $8.00 per adult.
- School groups from out of state will be charged $5.00 per student and $5.00 per adult chaperone. Again, we do not encourage additional
chaperones beyond the required 1 to 5 ratio described above. Additional chaperones for out-of-state groups will be charged $10 per adult.
