About Susan Bergman

Susan Bergman uses clay to explore the absurdity of human vanity as well as the tenderness and uncertainty that underlie our desire to connect with others. Her work is often narrative, mixing species and gestures to find metaphors for human emotions. Jackrabbits, warthogs, birds, vegetables, and the occasional fruit, are some of her favorite muses. Her boxes may contain a surprise or story inside, while functional pieces incorporate a wide variety of three-dimensional animal and plant life. Susan uses carving, sgraffito, and colored slips to tie together her designs.
