About George Segal: American Still Life
(approximate run time: 60 minutes)

George Segal created his art out of life’s seemingly uneventful moments – waiting for a bus, drinking coffee in a diner, listening to the radio – but his sculptures are more than just frozen moments. They remind the viewer what it is to be human. “Daily life has a reputation for being banal, uninteresting, boring somehow. It strikes me that daily life is baffling, mysterious, and unfathomable,” said Segal.

This fascinating program weaves together interviews with the artist, scenes of him casting a model in his studio, commentary from his friends, family, critics, and historians, and rare archival footage of the Pop Art scene in the ’60s.

Although George Segal’s work is not featured in the exhibition Lifelike, his work Three Figures and Four Benches, is a popular piece in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden and plays with the notion of everyday reality.

About The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore
(approximate run time: 30 minutes)

Inspired in equal measures by Hurricane Katrina, Buster Keaton, The Wizard of Oz, and a love for books, Morris Lessmore is a story of people who devote their lives to books and books who return the favor. The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore is a poignant, humorous allegory about the curative powers of story. Using a variety of techniques (miniatures, computer animation, 2D animation), award-winning author/illustrator William Joyce and Co-director Brandon Oldenburg present a hybrid style of animation that harkens back to silent films and MGM Technicolor musicals. Morris Lessmore is old-fashioned and cutting edge at the same time.

Morris Lessmore was awarded the Oscar® for Best Animated Short Film in the 84th Academy Awards®.
